(Program Representative) TI - Economic empowerment to Indigenous Peoples (IP) students' families through livelihood interventions KW - Indigenous people KW - Philippines KW - Economic conditions N1 - Public Management Development Program N2 - In most developing countries, many marginalized people specifically the indigenous peoples have suffered from economic deprivation and social injustices. Barangay Roxas, Panabo City which is located northern part of Davao region find itself in the same situation in which many indigenous peoples have been threatened by various factors such as insurgency, land degradation, inequalities, and even environmental concern. This ReP explored what sustainable economic development is, and how sustainable economic activity contributes to maintain sustainable development. This project fundamentally aims to help ensure IP students' retention is school through income-generating opportunity for their families. The specific objectives were to determine an appropriate and financially viable livelihood opportunity in Barangay Roxas, Panabo City; empowering IP parents by providing then with livelihood and entrepreneurial skills; and mobilize support from public and private institutions for the promotion and marketing of their livelihood products. Through skills training, the IP students; families were enable to engage in livelihood and earning activities and this was expected to be their path toward sustainable income. Consequently, the families were expected to provide for the schooling of their children and would prevent drop-out. Furthermore, local economic development enable local participants in order to effectively utilize business enterprise, labor, capital and other local resources to achieve social goals such as to promote decent jobs, eliminate poverty, promote a sustainable local economy that is congruent to the provision of quality basic services. There were eight (8) approved deliverables hat guided the scholar and the ReP Team during the implementation period from October to December 2016. Also, the five (5) ethnic groups in the local area were studied. The skills introduced to the IP's were based on the result of the pre-implementation survey to determine their skills. The skills training introduced were beads making, flower making (empty plastic bottle), leigh making, mat weaving, and basket making based on the socio-demographic profile of the selected IP families who were recipients of the project. Finally, this ReP present the situation of the indigenous peoples and highlight some areas of the success that play a vital role in economic entrepreneurship and strategies to diversify livelihoods in order to attain economic self-reliance ER -
