Summary: This Re-Entry Project (ReP) entitled "Sustainable Waste Management Through Women Empowerment" was implemented in Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC), the biggest fishery post-harvest infrastructure of its kind in the country. After the three-month implementation period, the ReP would have addressed stakeholders' complaints of garage accumulation at the dilapidated Garbage Transfer Station (GTS) that has been emitting stench and endangering, from contamination, the fish being supplied and auctioned in the fish port. Also, it would have solved the weak spot in the Integrated Waste Management System of NFPC. With the Philippines Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) and NFPC Managements' support, the ReP was executed by a 12-man Project Management Team (PMT), with the scholar as Team Leader. The Team was tasked to implement the ReP and produce the following deliverables: 1. Conversion of the GTS into a functional Material Recovery Facility (MRF). 2. Memorandum of Understanding between the women's group and the NFPC Management. 3. Organization and training program for the women's group. 4. Recognition and acknowledgement to stakeholders that comply with the port's waste management effort as the next step after the ReP implementation period. After ReP implementation, all planned deliverables were achieved. The PMT went further and gave recognition and acknowledgement to three NFPC port clients for being model eco-friendly establishments. As the first deliverable, the 70 m2 GTS was converted into an MRF, installed with storage bins for stowing recyclable, re-useable and even hazardous wastes. The facility was also fitted with a restroom and five units of light-weight metal push carts were fabricated for use by the women's group. On September 11, 2015, the second deliverable was consummated and the Memorandum of Understanding between the NFPC Management and the women's group was officially signed during the inaugural ceremony and blessing of the MRF. The third deliverable or the organization and capacity training of the NFPC women's group were effectuated through the SEC registration of the 25-member Eco Friendly Women of Navotas Fish Port Complex, Inc. (EFW-NFPCI) and the conduct of training/seminar on Gender Sensitivity, Women Organizing, Environmental Management, and MRF operation on July 23 - 24, 2015, which was followed up by another seminar on women empowerment and disaster preparedness on August 28, 2015. While the fourth deliverable was planned to be undertaken after ReP completion, certificates of recognition and eco-friendly establishment foster-stamp was awarded during the MRF inauguration to three (3) port clients, namely: Therma Mobile, Inc. or Aboitiz Power Group; Petron Corporation, and Happy Chef, Inc., a fish processor. The recognition earned pledges of support to the EFW-NFPCI and MRF from the said companies.
