This volume contains studies of central banks in twelve developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank. These countries contain 800 million people in poverty and some of the world's foremost microfinance institutions. Activities of central banks with implications for microfinance are analyzed in terms of whether they are developmental or promotional. The former tend to induce financial repression. the latter do not, but instead fill gaps in the range of services available, or otherwise improve them.
