520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In A Class of Her Own is the inspiring story of Angela Valdez Ramos (January 6, 1905 - February 10, 1977) as it vividly portrays her remarkable life and interesting times as a matriarch, teacher, suffragette, volunteer social-civic worker, devoted wife to a seasoned politician and diplomat, and a devout Christian. The book chronicles the story of an exemplary Filipina from Batac, Ilocos Norte who played a unique role in 20th century Philippine history whose parents were foremost nationalists and patriots. Her life story takes off in historic Batac right in the same year when the struggle against Spain erupted, and someho, she and other members of her clan found themselves in the thick of some of the most interesting moments in the country's 20th century history. It also narrates her love affair and enduring relationship with a crusading journalist and lawyer from Pangasinan - Narciso Rueca Ramos - who went on to become an undefeated five-term congressman and pioneer diplomat in the Philippine Foreign Service. It is also an inspiring story of how a mother and father reared and molded the character of three outstanding and exemplary children. Fidel V. Ramos, the 12th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Senate President Pro Tempore Leticia Ramos Shahani; and Consul Gloria Ramos Darodda. The book is likewise a tribute to all mothers and the Filipina whose role in nation building is most pronounced and felt in the quality and harmony of homes and families. Lastly, it traces the pioneering efforts of Angela, her four sisters and other university-bred ladies who tenaciously fought for women's rights. Together with their contemporaries and peers, their collective efforts opened a whole new world for Filipino women from the sheltered image of Maria Clara to one that now enjoys equal footing with the men in the professions, the career service, business and politics.
