| Summary, etc. | Safe Motherhood means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the knowledge, attitude and practices of pregnant women on safe motherhood in Mogpog, Mariduque. Another aim was to implement the interventions needed to address the factors affecting the knowledge, attitude and practices of pregnant women on safe motherhood. The collection of data was counteracted by continuously researching and by assigning the rural health midwives in consolidating the data needed for the project. Data collected provided the review of the current status of maternal health in the area in terms of the maternal health indicators being measured or evaluated. This was followed by the discussion interview with key informants as to facilitate assessment of knowledge and attitudes of the targeted mothers toward safe motherhood. Intended respondents were all interviewed during visits to the barangay health station. Evaluation of the results of the survey proceeded next and possible interventions were identified to promote safe motherhood. Interventions involving intensified information and education campaign strategies were conducted in the barangay health stations, a month after the scheduled survey of the respondents. Other interventions executed throughout the year included the implementation of the resolution on utilization of the birthing facility and implementation of the health facility enhancement program in constructing the new birthing facility situated beside the rural health unit. Based on data gathering and analyses, the respondents with the highest educational attainment have a greater awareness with regards to safe motherhood as reflected in the surveyed parameters. The results showed that economic status can influence the knowledge of the mothers as inferred from the interviews. Availability of health information is one identified factors. The distance of their area to the health facility hinders them from availing the services delivered to prevent complications during pregnancy and for the improvement of their health status. Other identified factors affecting the knowledge, attitude and practices of expectant mothers include the observation of traditional practices and beliefs, compliance to existing norms and culture and some myths and misconceptions in the locality. Addressing these factors, mainly the socio-cultural factors, the persuasion knob through intensified information, dissemination campaign and capability enhancement for health staff were implemented. Other interventions included were the implementation of the resolution on utilization of birthing facility and facilitated the construction of the birthing facility through the health facility enhancement program. |
