Summary, etc. | Several initiatives have been applied globally to address malnutrition, yet it is still one of the pressing health problems today globally. An increasing trend of malnutrition rates for the past three years has also been noted in Sultan sa Borongis and deaths were reflected in mortality report . This is a descriptive and qualitative study which generally aimed to decrease the malnutrition rate and prevent mortalities that caused by malnutrition, may it be a direct cause or as a co-morbidity, Specifically, it determined the factors of high malnutrition rate in the municipality; determined and assessed the status of the available intervention; formulated, developed and implemented sustainable strategies on decreasing the rate of malnutrition and achieve zero mortality cases caused by malnutrition. Findings showed that there were several factors that contributes to the increased malnutrition rate and increased mortalities due to malnutrition. This includes (a) poor leadership and governance, (b) nutrition is not a priority program, hence no programs, policies and budget allocations pertaining to it, (c) problems on health human resources (d) accessibility problems, health services were seldom delivered to GIDA areas, and (d) inclement weather and unstable peace and order situation. The RHU had already initiated some strategies on addressing the pressing problems on malnutrition, however, due to the aforementioned problems, there were poor implementation, monitoring and evaluation of these strategies. This study applied several strategies to address the problems of malnutrition addressing its causes based on the framework provided by the municipality. This strategies includes promoting good leadership and governance, community gardening to help address the food insecurity of the households, improving environmental health and sanitation practices and improving health services delivery. A 3-year LNAP plan was formulated and incorporated in the municipalities' IRA. Appointments of BNS, resolutions on creation of municipal WASH team and BNS were also formulated. Formulation of executive orders on the expansion of LHB and re-activation of MNAC was also done. With these strategies, malnutrition rate decreased to 1.9% and 2.8% respectively in 2015 and 2016 from 13% in 2014. There were no reported deaths due to malnutrition (both as adirect cause and as a co-morbidities) for the year 2015 and 2016. This study has been successful in establishing a Public Private Partnership and encouraging community participation with the commitment and support of various stakeholders and key players in the community. |
