520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The municipality of San Isidro in Surigao del Norteis regarded as the most schistosomiasis-endemic municipality in the Siargao Island. In fact, seven out of its twelve barangays are endemic to the disease. Although efforts to curb this disease continue and gains against schistosomiasis have been tremendous, it still remains a primary public health concern in San Isidro, Surigao del Norte. The current level of schistosomiasis prevention and control in San Isidro, Surigao del Norte based on several indicators include the following: 2.4% prevalence rate, 59% mass drug administration coverage, 13 positive cases identified and initiated treatment, 85% coverage of households with sanitary toilet facilities, and 46% coverage coverage households with a level II water system. Various strategies in order to prevent and control the disease are already being implemented in the municipality. These include increased the political commitment, capacity building, reliable information and financial and logistics supports, local legislation, human surveillance, mass chemotherapy, treatment of positive cases as well as construction of sanitary toilet facilities and improved access to safe water supply. However, the area of snail vector surveillance through environmental mapping is largely taken for granted. Environmental mapping through GIS technology using the findings of snail surveillance as well as those of the other schistosomiasis indicators is an innovative strategic approach that can be utilized by the LGU of San Isidro to aid in schistosomiasis prevention and control.
