Summary, etc. | Noncommunicable diseases (NCD), specifically hypertension (HPN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) remain to be a major problem in the world today. In La Paz, a 5th class municipality located in the northwestern part of the province of Abra, hypertension and diabetes mellitus continue to be among the top causes of mortality and morbidity. In the municipality of La Paz, there are 795 listed in the HPN and DM registry. Losartan, Amlodipine and Metoprolol are the maintenance medications used for hypertension while Metformin for diabetes. Risk factors identified were presence of family history of non communicable diseases, presence of vices and practice of unhealthy lifestyle. Gaps in the six building blocks were also identified as contributory factors. The community based hypertension and diabetes control program aimed to address the high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in La Paz. It included creation of a patient registry, formation of HPN and DM clubs in all barangays, patient monitoring, health promotion and disease prevention activities and training for health workers. A manual for hypertension and diabetes is being drafted in Ilocano. The community as well as the barangay health workers were involved in all the different activities. Policy making and increase in health financing are being lobbied to ensure sustainability of the program. |
