Summary: The initial aim of this research study is to assess the status of the infant and maternal mortality delivery rate in Cagayancillo, Palawan. This is in line with the Millennium Development Goals, particularly number four and five which are both on the reduction of infant and maternal mortality rate. In Cagayancillo, Palawan where health services are very limited, there is a 16% mortality rate. Though this may not place Cagayancillo, Palawan in an alarming situation, this does not mean that proper care and attention will not be given especially that home-based delivery, assisted by traditional birth attendant, and is widely practiced in the area. This is also what the study sought to address. As a qualitative research, this study focused on document and data analysis, coupled by data gathering (spot mapping) and informal interviews. These data provided the necessary information on the current status and the problems affecting infant and maternal mortality rate in Cagayancillo, Palawan. The results show that more pregnant mothers prefer home-based delivery assisted by traditional birth attendants than the birthing facility-based delivery assisted by skilled personnel. Further results showed that this is influenced by financial and geographical problems, lack of proper education, not to mention the superstitious beliefs about childbearing and giving birth. All these imply to deal with the issue of infant and maternal mortality rate, overall participation coming from the different sectors of the society and the government is very much needed in order to reach the final goal which is an experience of total well-being.
