By: Contributor(s): Description: vii, 93 leaves : illustrations (some color)Subject(s): Dissertation note: Graduate School of Public and Development Management. Health Systems and Development. Batch 4 Thesis (MPM-HSD)--Development Academy of the Philippines. Summary: Pregnancy is a delicate period for both mother and her unborn child. Regular monthly antenatal consultations are requested from the pregnant women to achieve lower rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. As important as having regular prenatal check-ups is the need to deliver a pregnancy in health facilities such as birthing clinics or in hospitals. It is highly recommended that health personnel (the physician, nurse, and midwife) are the ones who provide delivery services during labor. This is conducted within the confines of a duly-registered birthing facility in order to minimize the complications which may arise during and after labor. This project aims to further increase facility-based delivery of women in Gen. M. Natividad, Nueva Ecija in order to improve maternal health. Despite the availability of free antenatal and delivery services at the Lying-in Clinic, it is worrisome to note that some women fail to deliver at health facilities. Hence, this project aims to determine the current status of facility and home-based deliveries based on the six building blocks of the health system, as well as the socio-demographic factors and reasons that lead pregnant women of Gen, M. Natividad to the choice of not delivering in health facilities. It is also aims to provide interventions to address the identified gaps in the health system. Methods used in the study include the review of the existing maternal statistics records and target client list of the midwives and the surveying of women who fail to deliver their babies at registered health facilities. It is also aims to provide interventions to address the identified gaps in the health system. This study shows that the facility-based delivery rate in Gen. M. Natividad is increasing. However, gaps in the health system exist in the municipality, which hinder access of women from maternal health services. Solutions, which address the gaps in the building blocks of health, may be done to improve access to facility-based delivery and to improve maternal health.
