Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines. To combat the disease, the Department of Health through the National Tuberculosis Control Program, set a national target of a 90% case detection rate (CDR) of all forms of TB. Program implementation was difficult in the geographically isolated municipality of Languyan resulting in very dismal CDRs in the past six years ranging only from 13% to 28%. Considering the limited health human resource and geographic challenges in delivering TB health care services in the area, combined with poor knowledge, attitude, and practices of the community, key strategies were identified to improve TB CDR. A community-based tuberculosis control program was established and implemented through partnerships involving mining companies, local government unit, and a non-governmental organization (IMPACT) to increase TB CDR. Through this partnerships, funding for the realization of the program was secured. The following were the central strategies executed to ensure proper implementation and sustainability of the community-based TB control program: capability building of community volunteers to serve as TB task force members, regular consultation and monitoring of TB task force members, intensified information, education and communication campaigns and use of TB hotlines per barangay, education and formulation and passage of municipal and barangay level legislations.
