Summary: Majority if the barangays of the Municipality of Mansalay is still equipped with a Level 1 water distribution system. The residents rely heavily on natural sources of water like spring water, dep wells and rain water, all of which have not verified to be safe for drinking. Based on the annual reports seen at the Rural Health Unit, the morbidity of Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases remain in the top 3 for several consecutive years already. A typhoid outbreak has also been documented in one of the barangays (Barangay manual) in year 2013. Indeed, the need provide a preventive measure in alleviating the morbidity of water borne diseases is crucial. This study aims to decrease the morbidity of AGE cases by installing a Level 2 Sawyer water filter units in every sitio of the pilot barangay (Barangay Manaul). In conjunction to the installation of a Level 2 water system, information dissemination campaigns were also done to educate the residents regarding proper hygiene and water sanitation practices. Recorded date of cases seen at the THU show decrease of AGE cases from the pre installation to the post installation period in Barangay Manaul. The total percentage of AGE cases from Barangay Manaul in the whole Municipality of Mansalay dropped from 10% to a mere 1%. House to house survey done by BHWs and CHTs also showed a drop in the AGE cases in barangay Manaul from 269 during the pre installation phase 72 during the post installation phase. These results however, are still inconclusive because only 5 out of 17 water filter units were installed during the data gathering phase. Basing on the trend established from pre installation to post installation, it can be said that the study is successful in decreasing the morbidity of AGE cases. However, it is recommended that all the Sawyer filter units be installed. Sustainability of this project also relies on the proper maintenance of the filter unis as well as educating the people regarding proper hygiene and water sanitation practices.
