Proactive intervention fro the prevention and control of hypertension in Lupon, Davao Oriental / Sunshine R. Lariego-Villanueva.

Summary: This study aimed for a proactive intervention that can effectively prevent and control incidence of hypertension in Lupon, Davao Oriental. Also, this aimed to provide and audit of the available methods, materials, and equipments currently used by health professionals fro prevention and control of hypertension in Lupon, Davao Oriental , to identidy the limiting factors that prevent proactive intervention by the health service providers such as the possible threats and weaknesses that are frequently encountered by them and to determine the intervention of choice for the majority of NCD patients in Lupon, Davao Oriental. A descriptive, qualitative method was used which included patients who receiving services such as treatment for hypertension in all barangay health stations as subjects. The presence and availability of equipment and health promotion materials were measured by direct observation using a A checklist was used to assess the availability and efficacy of equipments and materials in the barangay health stations. A survey was also done among patients who were currently receiving treatment and other services from the primary health care facilities in the municipality of Lupon, on their preferences for health promotion. The subjects were asked to identify their preferred method as well as their ideal health personnel to deliver those. Results showed that most barangays lack the basic equipments included in the package of intervention for prevention and control of non communicable diseases of which hypertension belongs. As to health promotion methods only the conventional manners such as pamphlets, posters, and books are used in most barangays. Whereas, the respondents preferred methods were individual counseling and watching videos. This study also revealed that more patients prefer midwives to deliver individual counseling and group counseling to them rather than other health providers. This study resulted into resolutions and primary actions to address the demand of the community. This also documented one proactive intervention for the prevention and control of hypertension through smoking cessation program or campaign. Although Smoking Cessation Campaign in the municipality is a good start, sustainability should be assured.
