The study was conducted in Malimono, Surigao del Norte with 62 participants - 55 hypertensive patients from all barangays (N=14) and 7 stakeholders/policymakers. The participants categorized their health beliefs and practice under two sections: (a) risk factors and alleviating factors. Under risk factors were the following themes: (a) overworked and overfatigue, (b) eating high-salt and high-fat die, (c) deferring hospitalization and taking herbal plants as medications, and (d) vices: alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking. Under alleviating factors: (a) physical activity: doing light household chores and exercise , (b) eating vegetables and fruits, (c) engaging in stress-relieving activities, and (d) nurturing good health-seeking behaviors. They also identified the following socio-economic and environmental determinants: as negative determinants: (a) stress and poverty, (b) lack of health resources, (c) poor access and transportation, and (d) disasters. As positive determinants: (a) gardening, (b) the role of healthcare services (RHU, BHS and its programs), and (c) spirituality and church. Several policy options to address these factors were also identified. To conclude, health practices that predispose a person to hypertension are influenced by the sociio-economic and environmental determinants. However, several factors and determinants are unique to the municipality. This study study also affirms that the "voiceless and the powerless" can be empowered to make positive choices fort their health and well-being, participate in decision making , and influence the community. The study recommends that the policies identified in the study should be formulated and established in the municipalityItem type | Current library | Call number | Status | Barcode | |
