The report aims to improve understanding of the links among gender issues, public policy, and development, and in so doing to foster a wider interest in and stronger commitment to promoting gender equality. It is written for a broad audience of students and practitioners of development, and especially for those who want to know why gender-related issues matter to development policy and practice. The report focuses on evidence from developing countries, but when empirical research on key aspects in thin or missing in these countries, we present findings from industrial countries.
