Irrational use of antimicrobials contributes to the increasing trend in the resistance of microbes. At any given place especially in the rural areas, there are many case of inappropriate use of antibacterial, often inadequate dosage for non-bacterial infections. There are also cases of over-using of injections when oral formulation would be more appropriate. A common practice of self-medication is buying or procuring medicines just about anywhere available just to alleviate their medical conditions is very evident many rural areas nationwide. In Daguioman, factors that contribute to such dilemma are (i) the lack of physician in the community; (ii) lack of information dissemination, which is a direct result of the lack of Municipal Health Officer who spearheads the RHU activities and advocacies; (iii) lack of drug outlets that make the essential drugs available and affordable for the community and (iv) the lack of resolution or ordinance that regulates the selling of medicines among variety stores. The researcher's deployment as a Municipal Health Officer in the area answers the first and second factors related to irrational antibiotic use. But the third and fourth factors are problems that has to be addressed in a thorough and systematic planning that will involve both the community and the Local Government Unit (LGU) in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) by establishing drug outlets which will cater the needs of the people and formulating a resolution that mandates the store owners to stop selling medicines especially antibiotics.
