Creation of a barangay nutrition committee in addressing the malnutrition in Malinao, Tubajon, Province of Dinagat Islands / Eden Mae B. Rula.

Summary: Even in this era of technological advancement, the problem on malnutrition is persisting and even increasing. The burden of malnutrition is manifested beyond the individual to include countrys economy and the national development. The governments initiative has not been successful in reducing the magnitude of this problem. Generally, this study aims to create a Barangay Nutrition Committee to address the malnutrition problem in Barangay Malinao, Tubajon, Province of Dinagat Islands, specifically, it aims to determine the status of the local nutrition committee in the barangay to know the gaps in the existing programs for nutrition committee implemented in the barangay and to identify the intervention used to address the malnutrition problem of the barangay. This a qualitative study of the creation of the Barangay Nutrition Committee BNC in addressing he malnutrition problem of the barangay. Results showed that there was no existing local nutrition committee established in the barangay evident in the poor perception of the causes of malnutrition by the members of the barangay council, wrong information of the nutritional status of children reflected in the development plan, not tackling information issues in any of the sessions and the lack of budget allocation nutrition. Nutrition programs implemented were mostly downloaded from the national level with minimal to nil participation from the barangay. These programs were facing challenges that can be attributed to poor governance. The intervention that was identified and employed was the creation of a Barangay Nutrition Committee BNC. The processes involved appearance in council sessions and series of meetings among the different stakeholders. A resolution was passed for securing funding from the mining companies operating in the area. The BNC was created through an executive order was signed by the barangay Chairperson. A Barangay Nutrition Action Plan BNAP was formulated and implemented. Mobilization of the local government in the barangay through the creation of a local nutrition committee, anchored in a good governance is an untapped existing strategy that has the potential to effectively address the malnutrition problem of Barangay Malinao.
